Neck Pain And Sleeping Posture
Do you often wake up with neck pain, feeling like you’ve been carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders all night? Many of us experience this discomfort, and a significant contributor could be our sleep position. Let’s explore how sleep posture affects well-being.
One common culprit of morning neck pain is stomach sleeping. While it’s not the end of the world, it can lead to upper back and neck pain. Switching to side sleeping might seem like a solution, but it comes with its own set of challenges. Furthermore, using a too-flat pillow can cause your head to drop, putting stress on the joints and stretching the muscles for an extended period. in contrast, a pillow that is too thick causes the opposite and stresses the joints and muscles on the other side of your neck.
Ideally, we want to maintain a straight spine without deviating too far in any direction. If you’re serious about achieving a pain-free morning, it’s time to rethink your sleep routine.

Keep the neck moving!
In the meantime, here are 3 neck mobility exercises that can be incorporated into your morning routine to alleviate tension and discomfort in the neck:
- Neck rotations:
- Begin by tilting your head down, then rotate it to the right side, as if you’re trying to sniff your armpit. Roll your right ear over your shoulder – feeling a stretch on your left side. Continue the rotation upwards until you’re looking at the ceiling, facing the opposite shoulder, and then towards the opposite armpit. Return to the starting position and repeat the rotation in the opposite direction. You’ll feel a significant stretch along the opposite side of the neck, promoting an increased range of motion.
- Chin Retractions:
- Using two fingers, gently place them on your chin and press backward, inducing a double chin. We want to apply this pressure for 3-seconds before returning to the start position. This exercise aims to lengthen tight muscles that may contribute to tension from the base of the skull down to the shoulder blades. Perform this movement to help alleviate discomfort and enhance flexibility in the neck.
- Cat-Cow Mobility Exercise:
- Engage in a cat-cow movement to flex and extend the spine. Start by going onto your hands and knees and slowly moving your spine beginning from the pelvis, dropping the spine towards the floor while lifting your head towards the ceiling. Reverse the movement by taking your chin to your chest lifting your back (between your shoulder blades) towards the ceiling and tucking your pelvis. Repeat this fluid motion to promote spinal flexibility and relieve tension in the neck and upper back.
In summary, incorporating these exercises into your morning routine can contribute to improved neck mobility and a more comfortable start to your day.
