Why Active Release Technique?

The list of conditions and individuals who could benefit from Active Release Techniques all have one thing in common: they are all a result of overused muscles.

3 Main Causes for Overuse Injuries

  • Acute Injury- pulls, tears, collisions, etc.
  • Repetitive Injury- running, typing, lifting, swimming
  • Constant Pressure or Tension- posture

Each overuse injury will present slightly different but most will not know the signs or symptoms until the pain has arrived. The pain is a result of the formation of tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. The formation of scar tissue will result in weakness, loss of motion, numbness/tingling, or pain.

 ART Treatment

An Active Release Technique session would resemble that of a movement-based massage.  The practitioner will use their hands to palpate the taut and tender fibers of the muscles, ligaments or tendons.  After finding the adhesions a precisely directed tension is applied while specific patient movements are used to break up the scar tissue.

The goal of care is the increase the amount of oxygen and blood flow to the area. This will reduce the amount of scar tissue present, allowing for more pain-free motion in the area being worked.

We like to re-iterate that the stronger the pressure is, do not always mean the better treatment! Anyone can push hard into a muscle and make it hurt.

The importance of finding a certified provider is to make sure that the provider you are seeing has a great understanding of anatomy but also an understanding of how much pressure to apply and where to place the tension. Being certified means that the provider has a clear understanding and has been tested on over 500 different Active Release Technique protocols.

If you have been struggling with a nagging injury that just won’t seem to go away, finding an Active Release provider could be the answer to your problem. We treat many St. Louis endurance athletes and desk workers successfully with Active Release Technique.

When you visit our St. Louis chiropractic office you will be asked to detail your medical history, as well as your current pain-points.  Afterward, Dr. Donahue will perform a series of tests that will tell him about your condition, and he will then be able to provide you a structured treatment plan.

We will make sure you are confident and comfortable with the plan in place and always welcome a conversation should you feel uneasy at any point throughout the process.
